It’s time to play BINGO!
This engaging activity is ideal for introduction or review. It’s unique and more challenging due to the fact that the game players must think about which word on their board may have the same similar meaning to the synonym the caller calls out. Therefore, students are not just looking for a specific word that they are told to discover on their game board, but they must apply their thinking skills to discover the correct answer. As the caller, you may choose to let the correct answer be known, or unknown.
This interactive game can be played in a whole group setting,centers/rotations, with a substitute teacher or as homework practice. I like to use this game, and my other Reading related bingo games (bingo bundle coming soon!) in centers, where students must be accountable and help each other as a team. Being able to see all students help one another, become more fluent, and add to their Vocabulary, is a dream to observe as an educator! This product also works well to play when you have a substitute teacher step in. This product is helpful in collecting data to check for understanding of the skill. I have noticed a huge improvement in my student’s writing word choice, as we continue to learn with this bingo game! Let the fun begin…
Included within this file:
35 numbered bingo boards, 1 blank board for you to customize by hand, if need be
2 page Answer key
Definition of “synonym provided” on all boards
Instructions on how to play
Easy to use and keep track of ANSWER KEY (no cards you need to cut and save!!!)
HOW TO PREPARE AND PLAY:
1. Print bingo boards (35 created for you, 1 that is blank that you may
Customize to your liking by hand, and make additional copies of) in black and white or color. Your choice. :)
2. Laminate bingo boards for long term investment.
3. Use in a whole group setting or centers. You may use daubers, candy, disk chips, etc. as bingo markers to play.
--Don’t forget to have your students mark the FREE SPOT to get started!
4. Whomever the caller is (teacher or student), they may cross off, circle,
or highlight the words they have already used, to keep track of synonym words
leftover to call out. For long-term use, I would suggest laminating the answer key, as well as all boards. You can then cross off words with a dry erase marker. Super easy-Don't have to worry about cutting out caller cards and keeping track of them. You can print the two ANSWER KEYS double sided, so all you will need is to have that one sheet to call out and cross off words as you play!
5. You may decide if you want students to play traditional bingo or “blackout” style. Once a student yells out “BINGO!”, they have won that round.
I like to have that student sometimes have the option to take over as the new caller. Again, it’s your choice-There are several ways you may choose to have your little learners play. Easy, peasy, lemon squeezy! :)
