Why You Want to Use This Packet:
-get students out of the rut of using plain words
-increases student vocabulary
-allows practice for adding creativity to their writing
-All nursery rhymes come with directions and words to replace. I have also included a sheet with 3 or 4 copies of the nursery rhymes so that you may cut them out (laminate them if you want) and have students write on them.
-Place a nursery rhyme in a center and have students discuss how they can change the plain or "baby" words into grown-up ones. Let students use dictionaries, thesauruses or computers to discover better words or allow them to come up with their own.
-Use as a whole group or cooperative learning activity. While you post the nursery rhyme in the front of the room, students come up with replacement words. You can create a new nursery rhyme as a class or have cooperative learning groups create their own and recite them to the class.
Suggested age/level :
-Some of these can be quite difficult, so you will need to know the level/capabilities of your students. I have been able to use these with high level 4th graders. You can also use them for middle and high school students or high level ESOL students.
