Synonym Tombstones - A Halloween Craftivity for Overused Words
Put overused words to rest! Get your students thinking about synonyms and word choice in their writing with this fun October craftivity. You can use these Tombstone Synonyms as a whole class activity, or as part of a word work center.
Students fill each tombstone with synonyms for the overused word written on each tombstone (said, went, good, bad, then, very). The more, the better. Students could work independently or in pairs to generate the most extensive list of synonyms they can. They could also consult a thesaurus or the computer. A rubric is also included if you wish to use this activity as a formative assessment for word choice. When students have completed the activity, challenge them to try to use as many of the words as they can in their writing for the month.
This resource contains options for two different sizes of tombstones – one on full sheets (great for display in a larger area), and one on half sheets (great for smaller display areas). Print only the size you need.
You have three different options for printing (you want your tombstones to be sturdy enough to stand on their own):
- Print on grey construction paper and let your students color the accent pictures around each tombstone
- Print on cardstock (students will color the pictures)
- Print on regular paper, then glue onto construction paper and cut out around the tombstone shape (students will color the tombstones)
For easier completion, be sure students complete each page BEFORE they assemble the tombstone.
This resource is included in my October Craftivities - Literacy Themed Craftivities which contains 3 different craftivities perfect for the month of October.
