This packet can be used as a lesson or as a Literacy Station.
Prepare a chart using the large sundae and the heading Synonym Sundaes included in this packet or make one of your own.
Choose a book by Brian Cleary to use a s shared reading. He has many books on the market that teach synonyms. After reading the book or teaching synonyms as a lesson, mini lesson or during Morning Message and the children understand that synonyms are words that mean the same as another word, give partners, small groups or individuals the brainstorming sundae word web sheet with a word of your choice (teacher choice or if you want they may choose a word) in the center.
Children then brainstorm with their groups or partners and make a list of words that mean the same as the word in the sundae or center.
Then meet as a whole group and using the prepared chart, list lead or heading words in black and under each word heading write the synonyms that the children created in a different color marker.
This chart can then be used in the writing center or as an anchor chart for synonyms as children need to replace a word to enrich their writing.
Review what is a synonym and ask for some examples of synonyms.
Hand out the Synonym Sentence sheet. This can be given to individual students, partners or small groups depending on the needs of your class. You can differentiate as needed.
Students then make sentences using synonyms for the words that are in the boxes. For example: if the word in the box is big, then the student needs to write a sentence using a synonym for big.
Share a few sentences as a whole group.
Make one of the color sundaes together to model how to create the Synonym Sundae activity Children can make their own sundaes as individuals or with partners.
First they would fill in the synonym chart to provide synonyms and then make their own sundaes using the black and white copies that you can run off on construction paper so children can choose their flavors or you can run them on white paper and students can color their flavors.
The finished products can be displayed on a bulletin board or in the writing center for vocabulary enrichment.
Another option is to have the students use the colored sundaes and complete them as a Literacy Center or Stations and fill in the synonym sheets
I have included smaller and larger bowls so you can differentiate for your class as needed. I have also included up to 8 synonym scoops for each word I selected. The sky is the limit!!!
