Description

This is the perfect syntax analysis pack to build students' literary and rhetorical analysis skills! It's designed with AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition classes in mind, but the handouts and tools can be used in 9-12th grade ELA. Students will use handouts on schemes, tropes, and syntactical patterns to get to the "so what" of the text. Three practice passages (two fiction, one nonfiction) provide guided annotations to help students notice and examine patterns and meaning. A student reflection page assesses learning through open-ended questions.

What's included:

•Schemes & Tropes Definitions Handout

•Syntax Grammar & Meaning Handout

•Syntax Analysis Questions to Consider

•Three Guided Annotation Passages & Answer Keys: Passage #1: From Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice; Passage #2: From Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland; Passage #3: From Frederick Douglass’s Narrative of the Life of a Slave

•Ten-Sentence Analysis Organizer

•Student Reflection

This is a flexible product that can be used in many ways. Use the handouts and tools in a syntax analysis unit, mini-lessons, or as embedded analysis strategies in a bigger literary or rhetorical analysis unit. The Ten-Sentence Analysis Organizer can be used with any text, fiction or nonfiction. Though the handouts and tools provided are designed to be used together, they can all stand alone as vital resources in your language arts class.
