This lesson reviews elements of syntax (purpose, structure, punctuation indicators, sentence patterns, and effects) using examples from The Scarlet Letter and questions that accompany each example. The lesson culminates with students analyzing two passages from the novel. I teach this lesson after chapter 19 since all of the textual examples are from chapters 1-19.
The passages handout can be found in the "Notes" section of the last slide.
I use this lesson for AP Language & Composition and AP Literature & Composition, but it can easily be modified for college prep students.
