This is used to assess a student synthesis response to a piece of informational text. It supports several of the common cores standards.
I created this rubric after reading Sunday Cummins’s book Close Reading of Informational Text: Assessment-Driven Instruction in Grades 3-8. It measures whether students are able to:
Identify the main idea and support with evidence
Elaborate on how the evidence supports the main idea
Uses theme words (content specific) words and phrases in response
Is clearly organized
This will make it easier for you to assess where your students are with synthesizing text, and help you know where you should go next.
