This rubric can be adapted for any book.
In my classroom, I use an interactive read aloud approach to teaching reading strategies. I spend 2-3 weeks on a given reading strategy while reading an original trade book so that students can practice using a specific reading strategy while reading authentic literature. As students take notes during reading, they are able to demonstrate their understanding of a given reading strategy and then record their thinking in writing. At the end of the time frame (or upon finishing the book), students write an essay of multiple paragraphs in order to demonstrate their ability to summarize, comprehend, and WRITE to grade level standards.
