This form is used to teach students to understand how important it is to synthesize text features with content on a text. The We Do part is so that you as a teacher can model what to do when you read a passage to better understand it.
What to do:
On the place for Source: write the title of the passage you are about to do.
Predict: Tell students to predict the content of the passage using text features and the title.
Read the source
Identify the topic of the passage(this will help them figure out the main idea)
Main Idea: Ask them: What does the author want me to learn about the topic?
Supporting details: Identify what details are supporting the main idea of the text.
Synthesize text features: There are Two spaces to provide text features that are supporting the text. Here students can synthesize the information and explain how the text features help the understanding of the text.
Then they get to write their thoughts on the topic: Have they changed Their thoughts? Any new ideas?
On the second page they get to do it on their own with another passage.
