I used this handout on the rug during a read aloud. My students "synthesized" as they read - first, they jotted thoughts they had before reading (predictions based on the title/cover, connections they have, etc.)
During reading, they jotted about their thinking and noted whether their thinking changed, predictions were confirmed or not, etc.
After reading, students jotted their "final thoughts" in the third box. Some students came out with some big ideas, theme statements, things they took to heart, etc. It was great!
Any read aloud can be used. This could also be used for a follow-up literature circle.
