Are you teaching your students to synthesize as they read? These worksheets provide excellent practice opportunities. Each passage contains three sections:
1. BEFORE READING- First, students are given the overall topic of the reading passage, and they are instructed to jot down some sentences that explain their prior knowledge on the topic.
2. READING- Next, students read the passage/essay.
3. AFTER READING- Finally, students are invited to explain how they synthesized. After checking the box that describes how their thinking has changed (adding information, modifying their understanding, changing their thinking, or no change at all), students write a paragraph where they explain how they synthesized.
Passage 1: Nonfiction passage about camouflage
Passage 2: Fiction passage that includes storm safety
Passage 3: Nonfiction passage about William Still & the Underground Railroad
Passage 4: Fiction passage that features a girl fasting during Ramadan
