Description

Synthetic Materials Unit for Middle School Science: Students will read three pages of informational text on synthetic resources, natural resources, and single-use plastics. There are also a variety of response pages and a quiz in this unit. This is great for environmental reading or Earth Day. Students will learn that synthetic materials come from natural resources that have been altered through a chemical process.

This resource includes:

  • Three pages of informational text
  • Response Pages
  • a quiz

Aligned with the following standards:

NGSS MS-PS1-3.

Gather and make sense of information to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and impact society. [Clarification Statement: Emphasis is on natural resources that undergo a chemical process to form the synthetic material. Examples of new materials could include new medicine, foods, and alternative fuels.] [Assessment Boundary: Assessment is limited to qualitative information.]

Standard 8.1.2

Obtain information about various properties of matter, evaluate how different materials’ properties allow them to be used for particular functions in society and communicate your findings. Emphasize general properties of matter. Examples could include color, density, flammability, hardness, malleability, odor, ability to rust, solubility, state, or the ability to react with water. (PS1.A)

Utah SEEd Standard 8.1.4

Obtain and evaluate information to describe how synthetic materials come from natural resources, what their functions are, and how society uses these new materials. Examples of new materials could include medicine, foods, building materials, plastics, and alternative fuels. (PS1.A, PS1.B, ESS3.A)
