This is a project that can be used in Algebra 1 or Algebra 2 courses for the unit covering Systems of Equations.
This project asks students to choose two different cell phone companies to compare. The students will choose two companies, choose two similar plans, choose variables (this may vary, some students who do not use unlimited plans may choose variables to be data vs. cost, others choose minutes vs. cost, and others choose time vs. cost - you can guide your students as you feel fit), write an equation for each situation, solve the system, and determine what the solution represents and then determine which plan is a "better deal".
The project asks students to solve the system in 4 ways: graphing, substitution, elimination and matrices. However, the files are word documents so you can edit as needed.
This zip file will include: project directions, project rubrics, and a "day by day due date sheet" - which can be modified by you before you hand it out. I used the day by day due date sheet specifically for "chunking" for my special ed students, but it is helpful for all students in lower grades.
When I created this project I was at an IB/MYP school, so the students have two written pieces in the project that are graded using a "communication" and a "reflection" grade. You can choose to eliminate these portions or keep them. The rubrics are provided, and you have the option to change the project to whatever best fits your needs.
