This lesson may be only 3 pages but it really helps students learn why the elimination method is important. The product opens up with a fun scenario in which students must try to figure out two numbers that have a sum of -4 and a difference of -2. Students approach this problem using trial and error and are then guided through the same problem using an algebraic approach, which uses the elimination method. Students then practice their new skills with 4 more additional problems. All of the linear systems in this lesson are written in standard form with the coefficients of x and y being 1. Students may work collaboratively or individually on this lesson. I hope this lesson from my store, Let's Algebra, works well for you and your students.
