In this activity students apply their knowledge of systems of inequalities (or linear programming) to a very real life problem – their semester grade! This activity is intended for high school students to determine what grades they need for their 2nd quarter and exam to earn a particular grade for the semester. The student is walked through the process of creating inequalities that apply to this situation. It is based on the student’s first quarter grade and the assumption that quarter grades are each worth 40% of a student’s semester grade and the exam is worth 20%. This is particularly a good assignment to give as students start a new quarter and to set goals.
While the method used to calculate grades is best used in an Algebra classroom, the method can be applied to student grades in all subjects.
This product includes teacher notes, student handout, and an answer key.
