Do you treat a wide variety of children who attend the same self-contained classroom? Do they have diagnoses that run the gamut from autism to Down Syndrome and IEP goals that span answering simple WH questions to using Core Vocabulary on their AAC devices? Do these same children love playing games and videos on tablets, iPads and their parents’ phones? Do you struggle to find a common activity that works for all of your students??
If so, these fun videos about TRANSPORTATION are sure to hold the attention of ALL of your learners, while you can rest assured that you have covered ALL of their numerous goals and objectives within the SAME interactive lesson! #winwin
My caseload is comprised of primarily itinerant students and self-contained preschool classrooms. The service delivery model for these children with language delays is usually a large group lesson with a Total Communication approach. In order to meet the diverse needs and goals of a variety of children, diagnoses and communication modes, I need an interactive lesson plan with engaging activities. I have found that the combination of songs, videos, worksheets, daubers and structured play with common preschool toys works best! Some of my students are comprehending only basic vocabulary and directions, while others are ready for more complex concepts; therefore, I have to differentiate my lessons within the same classroom activities. From kids working on CORE VOCABULARY to students who need to work on following complex directions…the possibilities are endless.
Carl’s Car Wash is a cute series from Super Simple Learning that explores the theme of transportation. Set in a cartoon community where everyone knows that when their vehicle is dirty – it will be cleaned the right way – after a quick trip through Carl’s Car Wash! Young children love the predictability of each episode, but look forward to the surprises as well. The earlier episodes in season one tend to have simpler story lines than those later in the season and those in season two -- as the series has expanded to larger vehicles, such as semi trucks!
The included worksheets provide icons of the closed-set vocabulary to go along with each video presented to the class.
There are COLOR versions of the worksheets for those learners who need help finding the resemblance between line drawings and real-life objects. BLACK & WHITE versions of the worksheet are included for your learners who are familiar with simple line drawings – and to save on color ink! BOARDMAKER icons are used, as this is one of the most common sets of vocabulary icons used throughout special education and on various AAC devices.
The videos can easily be found on YouTube or through the Super Simple Learning website. They can be played on any device that streams videos from the internet – for a small group or individual lesson – or for a presentation to a large group or classroom, on any type of Smart Board or EPSON projector. The teacher or SLP can then tailor the lesson using the provided worksheets to target a variety of goals, based on the needs of the particular child. The worksheets could even be sent home with the child, for the parent to work on carrying over language goals while engaging their child in an activity they already enjoy! (I often have parents ask what they can do to help their children at home. And many parents also divulge that it can be difficult to pull their children away from the screens. Pairing this activity with the videos is a win-win situation for parent and child!)
I hope you have fun with this activity! Please consider leaving feedback on the product after you have tried it out!
