One of my main goals is to help my students learn how to become better readers of informational texts through my class. So I developed what I call "booknotes". I turn the topic sentence from each of the important paragraphs into a who, what, where, why, or how sentence. As the students answer the questions they will learn the valuable skill that the topic sentence states the important topic of the paragraph and the following sentences gives the supporting evidence. As the notes go through the book I begin to put more of the emphasis on the students to recognize the topic sentence and supporting details in the students. The students can then use these notes to prepare for any future assessments. This includes an answer key for students that need a copy of teacher notes. "Land of the Free civics resources" also offers booknotes for chapter 3-1 to 3-3 then continue this learning opportunity.
