In addition to using the new expository reading and writing curriculum, I've added Ted Talks to our repertoire the past two years to teach students how to analyze a speech. As they watch the video, they take notes on the subject. The second time through, they note the rhetorical strategies that dominate the speech and what appeals those shape. This handout helps them make sense of how to explain how devices shape appeals to create the overarching main idea. They then write an academic paragraph discussing how one specific device shapes an appeal to formulate the main idea.
