Giridharadas' TED Talk, A Tale of Two Americas. And the Mini-Mart Where They
Collided, is a great talk to use when discussing the American Dream. I have a unit where we look at the American Dream and immigration and it tends to fall in September. I am using this talk after we discuss and remember September 11th since I always pause my unit to reflect on the events of that day.
Description from TED.com- "Ten days after 9/11, a shocking attack at a Texas mini-mart shattered the lives of two men: the victim and the attacker. In this stunning talk, Anand Giridharadas, author of "The True American," tells the story of what happened next. It's a parable about the two paths an American life can take, and a powerful call for reconciliation."
This 18-minute TED Talk could be used in class or assigned as homework. My worksheet contains 18 questions and an answer key is provided for your convenience. Fifteen of the questions are answered during the talk and three of the questions are for them to answer after the talk. I would allow for 30-35 minutes for this lesson. Students would need time after the talk to answer the opinion based questions and you would want to allow for some discussion time.
