Product Description
Use this engaging 21st century TED talk activity to get students thinking about our diverse society by focusing on multiple perspectives given by societal "outsiders." This activity builds character and empathy (so important in today's sociopolitical climate) while targeting important analysis, writing, speaking and listening skills! This activity works well on its own, but pairs well with "Black Men and Public Space" by Brent Staples or any piece of multi-cultural literature.

Students will form their own inquiry questions about "insiders and outsiders" in society using the "QFT" process (handouts and rules/pacing slideshow provided), choose three TED talks from the listening board to watch, and write a response synthesizing the different perspectives and connecting to their inquiry question.

I created this activity for my students after seeing how engaged they were with TED talks, but wanting to make the experience more rigorous than a simple watch, discuss, repeat process. We were already exploring "insiders and outsiders" in society through various texts, and I love the idea of giving students choice in the classroom as much as possible...this is how this thematic TED talk choice board was born! Students engage with each text, and you can build in as much discussion as you want along the way (lots of room for think-pair-share, expert groups, and jigsaw here), but the end goal is synthesis. What are common ideas shared between all three texts a student has watched, and why does this matter? I found this to be an interesting and powerful activity, and I hope you will, too!
