This 2-week Oral Communication unit utilizes educational TED Talks to help students learn how to be effective communicators while learning about meaningful subjects.
The unit includes lists of discussion and analysis questions for 5 amazing TED Talks that I have chosen and have found to be most successful in my classes. After spending the first week analyzing speaking styles and tools through these TED Talks, I have students spend the second week developing their own TED Talk to give to the class about a topic they are truly passionate about. I include a Proposal Form for this assignment and a rubric for it.
For every TED Talk, students must be able to decipher the tone, mood, and overall thesis of the speech. They must also be able to pinpoint exactly what types of things made the speech so effective and powerful (nonverbal cues, speaking style, subject matter, visuals, etc.).
My students always love this unit and get really excited to hear their peers' TED Talks at the end of it. I always have a bunch of students from other classes asking to come in and watch on presentation days. I have had a lot of success with this unit in the past! Enjoy!
