These 24 task cards are designed to help students understand the concept of rounding by using the number line strategy. The first card has been completed for them to demonstrate how to visually see the number on the number line before rounding.
To use this strategy: Draw out a number line with three tick marks. The first tick mark will represent the value of the digit that is underlined. The third tick mark will represent one value greater. For example, 52, the first tick mark would have 50, and the third tick mark would have 60. The middle tick mark is meant to represent the middle of the value. In our example, 55 would be the middle.
These cards should be cut out and laminated. When students are using these task cards, they can use a dry erase marker to write in the middle number and the estimate of the number they are trying to round.
The last four cards in this set are CHALLENGE cards because none of the number lines have been completed for them.
