Assess your students' learning about Algebraic Expressions with this 1-page test. This test was developed to provide you with a glimpse into students' understanding by using a variety of items. Question types include fill-in-the-blank, short-answer, matching, and sorts. Concepts include verbal, algebraic, and numerical expressions; PEMDAS (a test version also includes GEMDAS as an alternative); key words; expressions vs. equations; and exponents. It is thorough and can be used as a formative assessment during your expressions unit, or as a summative assessment for the end of your unit. A key is included.
Special Note that aligns with my teaching: I teach PEMDAS and how it translates into 4 steps when evaluating expressions.
Step 1: Evaluate parentheses (although I will use the words "Grouping Symbols").
Step 2: Exponents
Step 3: A combination of the M & D from PEMDAS. This step includes the functions of multiplication and division but students must understand they must evaluate in order from Left to Right. They must indicate this in their response and not only list the 2 operations.
Step 4: A combination of the A & S from PEMDAS. This step includes the functions of addition and subtraction but students must understand they must evaluate in order from Left to Right. Again, they must indicate this in their response and not only list the 2 operations.
