Description

In preparation for reading The Giver, this Google Drive project challenges learners to dream up a utopian society that attempts to fix some of the world's problems in an ideal plan. The assignment can be done individually or in groups. Students will have a blast inventing a society that works.

NOTE: If you haven't taught them about utopias and dystopias, you might want to get this Introduction to Utopias.

They need to think persuasively about the following rubric categories:

→ Utopian Name

→ Purpose and Vision

→ Audience

→ Membership

→ Location

→ Activities

→ Price

→ Contact Information

→ Design & Layout

→ Persuasive graphics and manipulative design

→ Anticipate Reader Concerns

IDEAS to FIX:

→ Pain

→ Racism

→ Rich vs. poor

→ Crime

→ Lack of purpose

Students then must analyze their peers' presentations to ask valid critiquing questions about their utopias.

SUGGESTED ACTIVITY IMPLEMENTATION

Students need to apply their knowledge of utopias/dystopias to create their own utopian community. Each group will invent a utopia, design a persuasive travel brochure, which will require them to practice manipulative propaganda as well as effective design elements. They will then present their utopian vision to the class, persuading the crowd and discussing the weaknesses or concerns in their ideas. This requires the crowd to listen intently for questions they have about the utopia and craft quality response questions to spur serious analysis and problem-solving.

WHAT OTHER TEACHERS ARE SAYING ABOUT OUR UTOPIAS RESOURCES

Full of creative thinking and it was an awesome culminating task. Excellent project for all levels. Opened opportunities for teacher/student discussion regarding utopian societies. Helped students make connections to literature and current events in the world (various societies/governments).

Fun yet rigorous enough that students took it seriously! They worked hard and enjoyed this! Nice graphics and fascinating examples. This was an awesome resource that helped me to bring the book alive in my classroom.

♥ A great way to create discussion around utopian societies. My students absolutely loved doing this project and sharing their utopias with each other! I loved getting to see what each group came up with and the discussions they had while creating their worlds!

Unique culminating activity for the novel!  My seventh grade students were very creative when designing their own Utopian societies.

♥ Love the activity - it worked well, especially for a summer school class filled with antsy teenagers! My students are thrilled to create their own 'Utopia'. The materials are very thorough, so they know exactly what I'm looking for!
