Bundle Description
Students are fascinated by color symbolism in The Great Gatsby
These activities guide them in their discovery of the symbolism, reinforce their understanding, and assess their comprehension through essay writing

Included in this bundle are three separate activities that have been successful with my students.

Purchased individually, these three resources would cost $15; together here, $9.

I created these resources with Word 2016 and PowerPoint, so they are editable and customizable for your class.

FIRST, the Color Symbolism Activity for students to complete independently or collaboratively:

• This activity is eight pages of discussion and questions about color symbolism in The Great Gatsby.

• Students are provided with excerpts and quotes from the text that illustrate the effect of the imagery.

• Often, they are asked to identify the imagery and discuss how symbolism enhances characterization and setting.

The Color Symbolism PowerPoint Presentation serves as a key to the above activity
.
• There are 60 slides.

• Discussion of each color begins with naming the color, introducing its symbolism, and a providing a few examples of universal symbols. For example,

o ---white means purity and innocence;

o ---symbols include a bride, a child in white, and a dove.

• Following the initial discussion of each color’s meaning, are slides depicting the use of the color symbolism in the novel.

• These slides include relevant graphics, quotes from the novel, and questions to prompt students’ engagement during the presentation.

• There are over 80 graphics, over 60 quotes, and over 30 questions.

• Please click here to view the beautiful and engaging graphics included in the presentation:

Color Symbolism in The Great Gatsby Slides

Finally, this bundle includes a step-by-step guide for students to compose an essay about Color Symbolism in The Great Gatsby.

• Students choose what color and symbolism they want to discuss and if they want to discuss how the symbolism enhances characterization or setting and mood.

• There is a fill-in-the-blank thesis statement for students who struggle with this initial step.

• What follows are the basic steps for writing a literary analysis essay:

• Determine three main points

• Locate quotes from the text to illustrate points

• Cite quotes correctly (MLA)

• Develop paragraphs by discussing how points and quotes support the thesis (in this case how the particular color adds to characterization or setting and mood)

• Conclude with a restatement of the thesis and comment on effective use of symbolism

• Each step has examples of the expectation.

• I’ve included a scoring rubric that includes each step and point values.

Thank you for your consideration of this resource.
