The Hundred Dresses by Eleanor Estes is a Newbery Honor Book and a timeless classic about bullying and its effects on everyone involved.

Although it is assigned a DRA level 38 (3rd grade), I use this for book study with my 5th graders at the beginning of every school year because I consider the theme and vocabulary to be more suited to students of their age. My students are often not very enthusiastic about my choice of text (especially the boys), but by the end of the book they are begging for it not to be over, and asking if there is a sequel! The life lessons taught in The Hundred Dresses are drawn on all through the school year.

This download includes a critical thinking assignment that focuses on events that took place in chapter 7. Students are given two excerpts from the text that describe two characters' actions, and are asked to analyze the motivations behind those actions. An answer key with possible responses is provided.
