The Memory Coat book study goes along with an blog post about teaching inference.

This heart-warming book is about families immigrating to America to escape persecution. A young boy lost his parents due to an epidemic and he ends up living with his relatives. His only reminder of his family is the coat his mother made for him. Grisha's coat is tattered on the outside but beautiful on the inside. This story is about the family's journey to American and going through the immigration process at Ellis Island.

In this FREE unit, activities include making inferences, vocabulary, and crafts with a coat and suitcase. This unit can go with cultural studies, historic fiction, and family heritage.
