Why do little fish swim
nose to nose
and fin to fin?

A hundred or more,
three hundred or four,
all bunched up
through sea they soar!

Well, the next time you look
in a lake or a brook,
if you glance at a river
where pink and gold quiver,
when you see purple motion
in the breezy blue ocean,
or a rainbow leaps
from a waterfall steep…

those hundreds of fish
are really the scales
that glimmer and glisten
from mermaid’s tails!

Sticking together
as she dives and she glides
like a million sweet minnows
swimming side by side.

So, the next time you look
in a lake or a brook,
if you glance at a river
where pink and gold quiver,
when you see purple motion
in the breezy, blue ocean,
or a rainbow leaps
from a waterfall steep…

look for the mermaid,
her arms and her hair
are harder to see
but trust me…

…she’s there!

I am traditionally a drama teacher, but in March I sometimes put together a project for Women’s History Month. One year I explored Women of the Water, which naturally included the idea of mermaids. Every culture has a mermaid or water spirit in their literature and this inspired me to write this poem.

I have been teaching creative drama and theatre arts for twenty years with fourteen of those years spent teaching fulltime drama in the private school sector. I also have a background in stage design so most of my classroom projects have included stage crafts in addition to acting, analyzing text, dance and movement, playwrighting, and directing. I attended Stephen Sondheim’s Young Playwrights’ Festival workshop for teachers and have had a children’s play published. In addition to my undergraduate degree in Theatre, I also earned a Bachelor of Arts in English, so I have been right at home writing and illustrating works for children. I am currently working on a doctorate in adult learning, hoping to apply this to my teacher materials and presentations.
