THE MITTEN STORE ACTIVITY
SKILLS: matching mittens, counting pennies, nickels, dimes, writing number sentences & cent sign, sorting colors, color words, graphing
NEED: white paper for price tags, marker, class set of coins, either large or small
large pocket chart
THE MITTEN STORE begins with “Match the Mitten” game in a pocket chart in which all mitten pairs are matched. Then tell the students that “The Mitten Store “ is all set up now & they will be able to buy a pair of mittens. A storekeeper may be chosen to price the mittens. Set your limits on pricing & place price tags in the pocket chart in front of the mittens. This is a good opportunity to gain an understanding of the word “pair” & briefly discuss other items that come in pairs.
Take turns for each student to choose & “buy” a pair of mittens. With a large class, maybe only sell to a few each day or just show the coins needed to buy a certain pair with large class coins, or using small coins individually. When a pair is sold, remove it from the chart.
Addition & subtraction number stories can be told to practise writing number sentences.
To practise writing the math fact vertically, draw a big mitten on the board & write the math fact inside. Students will use the Mitten Worksheet to write math facts.
A Graphing Worksheet is included to sort/graph mittens by color.
