The Name Jar by Yangsook Choi is a charming children’s story picture book that addresses culture pride, self-acceptance, friendship and loss of individuality while attempting to assimilate into another culture.
Unhei a recent immigrant from Korea is nervous about her first day of school in America and is teased by the children on the bus for her Korean name on the way to school. When she reaches the classroom Unhei decides not to tell the children her name and tells them that she has not picked one yet.
This book introduces the topic of immigration and how immigrants may feel about leaving their homeland while feeling compelled to change their birth names in order to fit into society.... This is an important topic that many children can relate to in some way or another...
The underlying message in the story is that our names are a big part of our identity and culture and should be respected and valued no matter how difficult they may be to pronounce. Learning to address one another by name goes a long way and makes people feel connected and respected.
This is a must have book for all grade levels. Students will learn many important moral lessons and most importantly they will learn to accept people just the way they are!
