This is a ready-to-use packet with a total of 27 pages. It includes a 16-page student booklet (plus answer key) designed for students in grades 4-6 to use as they read The Secret School, by AVI. Following the student booklet is a 3 page test plus answer key that can be used upon completion of the booklet. Also included in this packet is a bookmark for students to use for keeping track of vocabulary words while reading the book. Created by Jean Martin.
The student booklet divides the text into six reading assignments (of about 20 pages each) with questions and tasks to go with each one. It is designed for independent work so that students can work on this in class while the teacher is meeting with another group. In my 4th grade classroom students were responsible for completing one reading assignment with the accompanying questions each week. They would be given three, 40 minute periods per week to complete one assignment. They would then meet once a week with me (or an aide or a parent), along with the other students reading the same book (we called this a "book club meeting") to discuss the book and review the assignments. At the end of the packet is a book test that can be used as part of the packet or handed out separately.
The questions and tasks in this booklet cover and reinforce the skills that good readers need to understand and maintain. They include comprehension, visualization, sequencing, summarizing, connecting to the text, and vocabulary. The packet also gives students essential practice in writing to explain their thinking and to demonstrate their understanding.
