These “halfway questions” for The Things They Carried by Tim O’Brien are designed to help you determine if your students are current with their reading. I’ve written two versions. Each version contains five questions: two True-False questions, and three questions that can be answered with a phrase or brief sentence. Each version can be completed in about five minutes. Answer keys, with page references, are included. You can use these “halfway questions” to motivate students to keep reading. Students who have read at least half of the book will find the questions easy. Students who have fallen behind in their reading won’t know all the answers. This creates an opportunity for you to encourage students to keep reading. If students can’t answer one set questions, you may want to give a few more days to catch up on their reading. Then they can get a second try with the alternate version.
