I used this resource to help my first
graders understand the novel, The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, by
L. Frank Baum better. This is an
extended text for one of our CCSS units,
and is pretty complex for some young learners. This comprehension guide really increased engagement in my class, as well as helped students think about the novel in different ways. As we worked through each page students were able to make more connections with the text. This resource would be great for any elementary classroom.
Questions types are read and respond, multiple choice, and fill in the blank.
There is one page to complete for each chapter, except the last few chapters. These chapters were pretty short, so I put 2 to 3 chapters per page for chapters 20-24.
You can copy one page for students each day, create an entire packet for each student, display pages on a document camera for response in a reading journal or use in any other way that suits your class’s needs. This might even be a great center, guided reading or reading circle resource.
Answer keys follow the comprehension pages.
