This Zip file contains a THIEVES Pre-Reading Strategy Power Point lesson and two THIEVES graphic organizers.
In the lesson, students learn about what the THIEVES strategy is and how to use it to activate prior knowledge and set a purpose for reading.
THIEVES is an acronym for title, headings, introduction, every first sentence in a paragraph, visuals and vocabulary, end-of-chapter questions, and summary.
Once your students get the hang of the strategy and how to use the organizers, you can have partners work together to use the strategy to preview a variety of non-fiction texts. For example, you might have them preview a chapter from their Science textbook. They can then discuss what info they "stole" from the text.
