Teach your students to "steal" information from their textbooks and other nonfiction texts using text features. The THIEVES acronym teaches students to look for specific features like the title, headings, introduction, every first sentence, visuals, vocabulary, end-of-chapter questions, and summary.
This printables kit includes:
* high-resolution poster (recommended size: 16 x 20 inches)
* matching bookmarks (2 x 5 inches - 8 on a page)
* handout for printing in black and white on standard copy paper (If you prefer a color handout, you can also print the poster at 8 x 10 inches.)
This strategy has made a huge difference for my students with reading disabilities and other students who just don't like to read. Use this kit to teach them how to effectively preview and scan their text to find useful information.
