Overview:

Do your students know how to read an informational text for main and central idea? Are they equipped to locate evidence and explain how it fits in the rhetorical triange? Do they know how to analyze whether a central idea is effectively conveyed in a text?

This lesson is designed to serve as a guided release to prepare students for the written component of the Common Core test (in TN, this is the writing portion of the TNReady test). After teaching students how to find the central idea & identify different types of evidence in a text using the rhetorical triangle, you need to teach how to analyze the effectiveness of the central idea and how it develops in the text through the use of evidence.

This lesson teaches students how to identify and analyze the common structure of an informational text using a graphic organizer with a gradual release of responsibility back to students.

Students read and annotate a text with a main idea gist next to each paragraph. Then, students begin filling out the graphic organizer. There are two columns for each item: identify and analyze. The guiding questions are included for each section; the goal here is to differentiate between locating something in the text & analyzing by critiquing or breaking apart what the author says. The first graphic organizer is heavily scaffolded & has sentence starters for each question. The 2nd and 3rd text + graphic organizers do not have the sentence starters.

This lesson will prepare students for the type of pre-writing and thinking they must do to write an analytical essay, which is exclusively what TNReady and Common Core ask students to do.

This is also a critical teaching step before asking students to write an analytical essay; in this lesson, students only focus on identifying and analyzing, not the structure of writing an essay.

This back has 3 different lessons that will take 3-4 hours to complete in full. You could work on it over the course of a week, teach in class and assign homework, or use as additional remediation for struggling students.
