TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD
DAILY DILEMMA ONE SHEET (#4)
Are the courts the “great levelers”?
Maycomb County v. Tom Robinson
I am really excited about this Daily Dilemma! To Kill a Mockingbird is such a wonderful novel, and it raises so many interesting questions about law, equal rights, and justice.
My DAILY DILEMMAS work well as last-minute sub plans, and they are an excellent supplement to any class focusing on ethics, law, justice, argumentative writing, and debate.
INCLUDED IN THIS UNIT ARE THE FOLLOWING:
➢ A ONE SHEET DAILY DILEMMA. Traditionally one sheets are single page documents that summarize a person’s accomplishments, or advertise a product or a film. They are sometimes used to introduce new artists and/or films. They usually contain an image or two, biographical information, and taglines. I have created these DAILY DILEMMA ONE SHEETS to help students engage in critical reasoning and to introduce them to philosophy, ethics, law, and justice. They may be used as homework or class work, individual or group work, and even as seminar or debate preparation.
➢ Teacher notes – these are presented in the same one sheet format so they are equivalent to three pages of notes. You could use the teacher notes as part of an overhead presentation.
➢ This dilemma raises questions about the trial, Boo Radley’s fate, Atticus’ battle with the people of Maycomb County, and his closing argument.
➢ This novel gives students the opportunity to dig deeper into the relationship between law, equal rights, and justice. I find my students have varying and emphatic opinions on this subject, yet their beliefs are not grounded in facts nor knowledge. On the last page of the preview you will find links to several TpT units that focus on law and justice.
➢ The student one sheet (actually two sheets) includes the following sub-headings:
WHO THE CASE IS ABOUT
HIGHLIGHTS OF ATTICUS’ CLOSING ARGUMENT
THE EVENTS AFTER THE TRIAL
QUESTIONS (NINE IN TOTAL)
