I am so excited to make this TOKYO 2020 SUMMER OLYMPICS ACTIVITIES BUNDLE available to you! I am certain that your students will enjoy doing these activities, and will learn so much about the great event that is The Olympic Games. It is truly remarkable how so many subjects and topics can be taught around this international event.
***** DUE TO THE EXTREMELY SHORT LIFE OF THIS PRODUCT, THIS BUNDLE OF ACTIVITIES IS PRICED TO SELL AT ONLY $15.00 *****
You will notice that almost all reading or writing files include a video link.
I have found the perfect videos to go along with each lesson.
****THERE ARE 73 VIDEOS IN ALL IN THIS BUNDLE!****
I recommend that you begin your introduction with these two files:
FASCINATING FACTS ABOUT TOKYO – PowerPoint Presentation or Google Slides
This 33-slide presentation includes 17 short videos (3 to 5 minutes) of all types, gives students a glympse at the fascinating city of Tokyo, the districts, the landmarks, and a taste of the unique Japanese culture: sushi, sumo wrestling, etiquette and more!
THE 2020 OLYMPIC GAMES – PowerPoint Presentation or Google Slides
This 23-slide presentation includes 17 more integrated videos of all types, gives students a look at how Tokyo is preparing to receive the world. In this presentation, students will see what Japanese technology Toyota will be showcasing, how the Olympic medals were cast from recycled cellphones, how the Olympic pictograms were drawn, how the Olympic torch was designed (from the designer himself!), how the venues were built and how the entire games are laid out over the city.
I guarantee that once your students have seen these two presentations, they will be eager to learn more.
You may choose to do the remaining activities in any order you wish.
I will describe each of them here in the alphabetical order they will be placed in the .zip file, so that you can better plan your lessons.
BIOMIMICRY WITH TED TALK LINK – READING, QUESTIONS AND VIDEO
This is a scientific article explaining how science mimics nature in order to come up with new, innovative ideas. Speedo used this science to create swimming gear for Olympic athletes.
The Ted Talk video addresses the debatable question: “Has science gone too far?”
ETHICS AND THE GAMES – READING, VIDEO AND ACTIVITY
This is an article that discusses the IOC’s (International Olympic Committee) quest for fair play in the games.
EXTRA ONLINE RESOURCES – INTERACTIVE WEBSITES AND ARTICLES
My favourite is Olympic Bodies – Can you guess their Sport? from the New York Times website.
There is also a link that you can use if your school teaches Sex and Relationships, which was created by the Junior Olympics. I like the activity called: Draw the Line where students have to identify if certain behaviour is right or wrong.
INFOGRAPHICS – POWERPOINT AND .PDF
This is a great starting point for a research project. Assign each student or group an infographic and ask them to research additional information such as videos, stars to watch, anatomy of an athlete for their sport.
MATCHING GAME – EVENTS AND NAMES
This matching game serves to familiarize students with all the different sporting events in the Summer Olympics.
NEW SPORTS TO 2020 – THINK-PAIR-SHARE COOPERATIVE READING ACTIVITY
The instructions to the Think-Pair-Share activity are in the file. There is also a great video about the new rock climbing event for 2020.
OLYMPIC ART LESSON AND ACTIVITY – READING, VIDEO AND ACTIVITY
This is for those of you who also teach art. Art and design is a big part of the Olympics and it is all explained in the 6 videos that are integrated in this lesson. Also presented is a look at typical Japanese art, the Anime.
Two art projects are proposed at the end of this document.
OLYMPIC DISCUSSION CARDS – DISCUSSSION ACTIVITY
Discussion cards on various questions related to the Olympics.
SELECTED OLYMPIC VIDEOS TO WATCH IN CLASS
I have personally viewed several hundred Olympic videos while researching this unit. These 31 extra videos have been chosen for their length, content, quality and interest level. They can be used as Bell Ringers at the start or end of class.
STARS TO WATCH AT 2020 OLYMPICS – READING, ACTIVITY AND PROJECT IDEA
Students are introduced to 6 athletes who are sure to have an impact on the 2020 Olympics. I selected athletes from different countries and different events. Students must complete a Profile Sheet of one of the 6 athletes on the provided template.
SUPERLATIVES DISCUSSION GAME
This is another card game where students are asked to discuss which event requires the most… or it the …est.
10-YEAR-OLD OLYMPIAN SKY BROWN – READING FOR INTEREST AND VIDEO
Have your students read about a young girl, Sky Brown, who has hopes of representing her father’s country, Great Britain in her mother’s native country of Japan in 2020.
THE FOURTH OLYMPIC MEDAL – READING AND UNDERSTANDING
Learn about the obscure Pierre de Coubertin medal which is seldom awarded and that few know exist.
VOLUNTEER APPLICATION WRITING – READING AND WRITING EXERCISE
Students read about the 10 different fields of volunteers needed at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Afterwards, students fill-in an application form and answer a few questions. In the end, they are asked to write a text, 150 words or less, explaining why they are best suited for the position.
WRITE – REPORTING ON THE GAMES – WRITING ACTIVITY
Here students are given a lesson on how to write either a "hard" or "soft" sports story for a newspaper:
WRITING ARGUMENT E-SPORTS – WRITING ACTIVITY
Are video games sports? Should e-sports be in the Olympics?
This activity shows how to form an opinion and write about it.
SUMMER OLYMPICS GUESSING GAME – POWERPOINT OR GOOGLE SLIDES PRESENTATION
This is a 20 question quiz about the events to further make students aware of the different sports at the games.
