This activity will engage your students and get them out of their seats! It will help refresh or strengthen their understanding of using trig functions to solve equations and to find the sides of right triangles.
What is the Goal of this activity?
To enhance student’s understanding of basic triangle trigonometry through the use of repeated reasoning and solve equations using trig functions.
What Common Core Standards is it aligned to?
CCSS.Math.Content.HSG-SRT.C.6: Understand that by similarity, side ratios in right triangles are properties of the angles in the triangle, leading to definitions of trigonometric ratios for acute angles.
What Pre-Skills do my students need to know?
Prior to doing this activity, students should have learned the three basic trig functions: sine, cosine, and tangent. Students should know how to set up the equations and solve them to find the missing sides of the right triangle. Students should also be comfortable using a calculator.
What will they do in the activity?
Students will use problems posted around the room to set up and solve trig equations. They will then move to another card which has the answer on it and all the while create a fun phrase using a letter on each card. They are bound to be engaged, provide you with adequate time to work with students individually and break up the monotony of plain practice worksheets.
Is it worth the money?
Absolutely! You will save yourself at least 5 hours creating, editing, correcting, and putting all of this together! It also comes with an answer key with every problem worked out!
