This would make a fabulous STEM activity to end the school year!
Using this lesson plan, the teacher guides students as they make paper tops, designed to spin on tables. As students work, they use geometric math vocabulary to describe what they notice about the attributes of the shapes they are creating. The pdf contains:
- 3 pages of step-by-step teacher directions with images, including suggestions for related math vocabulary
- 1 page with suggestions for art, extensions, and related children's books.
A sample video of spinning tops
can be found on my website.
I have individually guided children as young as seven through this activity. In a classroom it’s probably best utilized in grades 4-7.
