Mixing Tableau with Song Lyrics

A great group work activity for middle and high school students. The activity allows multiple intelligences, dramatic arts, and popular culture to merge into one fabulous performance.

Students are responsible for using song lyrics as a base to create a clear character story with a clear conflict. Working in groups, students perform the story using a series of tableau images.

I traditionally use this activity in my grade nine drama classroom. It is a formative activity, with assessment for learning attached to the whole process, for students in the middle of their Introduction to Drama Unit.

This activity can be adapted to fit the needs of the individual teacher. It would work really well when teaching and/or reviewing short story elements. Or, this activity can be used in any classroom as an icebreaker to get the students 'thinking on their feet' and communicating with one another.

Activity handout/worksheet includes:
- step by step instructions for the group activity
- requirements for the tableau performance
- song lyric analysis worksheet
- tableau plot planning guide

In my secondary school classroom, the students bring in their song as homework and they have the period to work on the material. We perform and discuss the pieces during the next period. Timing of this activity could be adapted to fit the needs of your students.

This is a highly successful activity and the students love it! It also is an excellent activity to discuss the use of language in modern song lyrics.
