Teach your students this 5 step process for calming down when they have a problem. Laminate and post the steps in an area where students can go to use them and resolve their feelings. If their problem involves another student, check out my calm down spots for student led conflict resolution.
Step One; Take a breath in (smell the flowers), breath out (blow out the candles). Do this 3 times.
Step Two: Think about what happened. (What is bothering me?)
Step Three: How can you fix it? (What can I do to make this better?)
Step Four: What will you do next time? (Is there something I could do to avoid this in the future?)
Step Five: Go! I am ready to return to class. (If the issue involves another student, the student may ask their classmate to meet them at the Solve it Spots (additional resource) to resolve their issue.
