This project asks students to take action by contributing to the solving of an energy problem in their school or community. One of my goals in creating this project was to show my students that each of them has the ability to make a difference where our environment is concerned. Inquiry is also an important part of the Ontario Science curriculum and this project encourages students to utilize these skills.
My class did this project in small groups (2-3 students) and loved it. Some project ideas included reducing school energy use, reducing the use of plastic water bottles and reducing paper use. Many of them did energy and waste audits of different classrooms in our school which gave them a real understanding of how they and their classmates contribute to their own identified energy problems.
The project is meant to be scaffolded and includes three parts: a project proposal, research outline and action plan/conclusions. Also includes a rubric based on the Grade 5 Ontario Science Curriculum. Could be adapted for higher grades.
