This Back To School Unit uses a class play to build collaboration and communication skills, while simultaneously developing citizenship skills. To encourage student engagment and get students reading from the very first day of school, this unit has every students take part in a musical play. With a short and easy-to-implement play (like those available at Bad Wolf Press), I planned a quick 2 and 1/2 weeks for this unit, allowing students to have the opportunity to present their learning quickly to parents and families. This unit can easily be adapted to 2nd-5th grades by changing the social studies standards. You can also incorporate digital citizenship skills in this unit. Please note that my assessments are intended to be used in very transparent, collaborative ways with students. I included some observational formative assessments, some written, and suggested some quick response questions. Make sure to check in with students throughout the unit, providing mini-lessons to small groups on material they haven't mastered yet. I hope you enjoy!
