Take a Break is a Responsive Classroom strategy for students to calm themselves and refocus after getting upset, blurting, behavior issues, etc. Students simply get asked to take a break, walk over to the take a break spot, sit for 1-2 minutes and return to their desks when ready or when asked to go back.
At the Take a Break station I have "fidgets" for students to squeeze and play with. There are two sets of cards for them to go through: emotion cards to understand the emotion they are feeling and take a break step cards for students to think about what to do when at the station.
This kit includes:
• Take a Break sign (white and shiplap background)
• Take a Break sign (black and white)
• "Fidgets" sign
• Emotion Cards
• Take a Break steps cards
Take a Break works really well when modeled correctly many times throughout the year. My students respond well to it and it really helps them to refocus and learn how to control themselves in a positive way.
