In my classroom, I have a "Take a Break" table where students can simply take a 5 minute break. Students take breaks when they are overwhelmed, frustrated, or nervous. The break lasts about 5 minutes and includes a few options to choose from during the break: drawing, writing, reading, resting. The student is still responsible for listening to the teacher.
In addition, students are asked to bill out a "Body Control Sheet" where they are asked to tell me if their body was in control, somewhat in control, or not in control.
This is helpful for students with behavioral problems and for those who exhibit anger management issues.
