[NO PRINT & NO PREP / Telepractice & In-Person]
Which word starts with a different sound? Cat. Fork. Couch. Students have a blast identifying which picture (field of 3) begins with a different sound so that they can playfully gesture and tell it to “TAKE A HIKE!” as the clinician turns the page and it “magically” disappears. Incorporate motor movement to maximize engagement.
CLINICAL TARGET MASH-UP: This activity can be used in a variety of ways. The core purpose is to increase awareness of initial phonemes in words and strengthen grapheme-phoneme knowledge (as the letter corresponding to the targeted phoneme is presented at the top of the slide). Students can be prompted to generate additional words beginning with the targeted sound, or you can have fun taking turns identifying new words and determining if they begin with the same or different sounds.
This activity also works very well as a “warm-up” for students working on higher level skills to experience some success within a fun routine before moving on to more challenging phonological tasks.
