This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Taking Care of Ourselves. It is the THIRD week in my Taking Care of Ourselves Unit.

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about food groups. They will gather information about the five food groups from The Monster Health Book by Edward Miller. In addition, the students will go on an information hunt using the USDA's website. At the end of the week, students will create a meal menu that includes foods from the five food groups. They will also use weekly grocery store sale papers to classify food based on the five food groups.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
reflect on their learning and write detailed sentences about a topic.
list the 5 food groups.
use electronic menu icons to locate information.
create a menu that includes food from the 5 food groups.

The Common Core Standards addressed are:
RI.2.2 Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.

RI.2.5 Know and use various text features (e.g., captions, bold print, subheadings, glossaries, indexes, electronic menus, icons) to locate key facts or information in a text efficiently.

W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question.
