This weekly lesson plan goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Taking Care of Ourselves. It is the FIRST week in my Taking Care of Ourselves Unit.
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be reading The Magic School Bus: Inside The Human Body. The students will complete several activities with the combined-text book. They will identify and explain the narrative elements, sequence events, locate key information related to a topic, complete a graphic organizer for each body part mentioned in the book and diagram the human body.
At the end of the week they will take a test on the book.
By the end of the week, they are able to:
explain the narrative elements in a text.
sequence events in the story.
locate information within a text.
create a diagram of the human body.

1 student response booklet template to copy for each student (6 pages)- the booklet is formatted to be printed front and back so that when you fold it all the pages line up. You don't have to print it as a book. You could copy it and cut the pages so that the students can paste them into their reading journals.

RL.2.7: Use information gained from the illustrations and words in a print or digital text to demonstrate understanding of its characters, setting, or plot.
RI.2.2: Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text as well as the focus of specific paragraphs within the text.
RI.2.7 :Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.
RI.2.10: By the end of year, read and comprehend informational texts, including history/social studies, science, and technical texts, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
RL.2.10: By the end of the year, read and comprehend literature, including stories and poetry, in the grades 2-3 text complexity band proficiently, with scaffolding as needed at the high end of the range.
