This 4 week Unit goes along with the common core curriculum map for 2nd grade: Taking Care of Ourselves. It is the LAST unit. Since it is meant to be taught the last 6 weeks of the school year, I only included 4 weeks. I wanted to allow 2 weeks for other things.

Week 1: The Magic School Bus: Inside The Human Body
Week 2: Nutrients
Week 3: Food Groups
Week 4: Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

Week 1: The Magic School Bus: Inside The Human Body

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be reading The Magic School Bus: Inside The Human Body. The students will complete several activities with the combined-text book. They will identify and explain the narrative elements, sequence events, locate key information related to a topic, complete a graphic organizer for each body part mentioned in the book and diagram the human body.
At the end of the week they will take a test on the book.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
explain the narrative elements in a text.
sequence events in the story.
locate information within a text.
create a diagram of the human body.

Week 2: Nutrients
In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about nutrients by reading Good Enough To Eat by Lizzy Rockwell. They will use a graphic organizer to organize the information they read. The students conduct a science investigation to determine if food items contain the fat nutrient. At the end of the week, they will put it all together by reading and evaluating food labels to determine the number of nutrients. Students will write an opinion paper based on the information gained from reading the food labels.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
use text features to understand key details in a text.
use a graphic organizer to organize details in a text.
conduct an experiment to determine if fat is in food.
identify nutrients in food by looking at a food label.
write an opinion paragraph based on information found on a food label.

**Students will work in groups of 4 or 5 throughout the week. Each group will need a copy of the book.

Week 3: Food Groups

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be learning about food groups. They will gather information about the five food groups from The Monster Health Book by Edward Miller. In addition, the students will go on an information hunt using the USDA's website. At the end of the week, students will create a meal menu that includes foods from the five food groups. They will also use weekly grocery store sale papers to classify food based on the five food groups.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
reflect on their learning and write detailed sentences about a topic.
list the 5 food groups.
use electronic menu icons to locate information.
create a menu that includes food from the 5 food groups.

Week 4: Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs

In this weekly lesson plan, students will be reading Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs by Judi Barrett. The students will work in groups to identify the narrative elements (genre, author's purpose, characters, problem/solution). Throughout the week, they will use the book to answer text related questions. They will also analyze 4 words to determine their meaning in context. Students will use their knowledge about the 5 food groups (learned in week 4 of this unit) to identify and classify foods within the book. At the end of the week, they will discuss the pros and cons of living in Chewandswallow. Using their generated list of pros and cons, they will write a brief opinion paper. On Friday, they will complete a story test on the book.

By the end of the week, they are able to:
analyze the narrative elements in a story.
determine the meaning of a word in context.
identify and classify foods listed in the text.
form an opinion by listing pros and cons.
write an opinion paper.
answer text related questions.
